About Duduma Waterfall

A majestic waterfall on the Machkund River cascading from 175 meters. Spectacular during monsoon season with a hydroelectric power station nearby. One of the most photographed waterfalls in Odisha.

Duduma Waterfall, cascading from a staggering height of 175 metres on the Machkund River, is one of the tallest and most spectacular waterfalls in eastern India. Located near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border in the Koraput district, this thundering cascade is often called the 'Niagara of Odisha' ù a title well deserved when witnessed during the monsoon months.

The Machkund River, originating from the highlands of the Eastern Ghats, plunges over a horseshoe-shaped cliff into a misty gorge below. During peak monsoon (July to September), the waterfall is at its most dramatic ù the sheer volume of water creates a deafening roar that can be heard from kilometres away, and a perpetual mist blankets the surrounding jungle.

A viewing gallery and walkway have been constructed near the falls, allowing visitors to safely witness the spectacle from multiple angles. The rainbow that forms in the spray on sunny days is a favourite with photographers. Below the falls, the river flows into the Machkund Hydroelectric Project reservoir, one of the oldest hydroelectric plants in India, commissioned in 1955.

The area surrounding Duduma is ecologically rich, with tropical and moist deciduous forests supporting a wide range of wildlife including langurs, wild boar, and numerous butterfly species. The tribal Paraja community settlements near the falls add a cultural dimension to the visit.

Duduma is also steeped in local mythology. Tribal folklore speaks of a goddess who resides behind the curtain of water, protecting the valley from floods. During the annual Chaitra festival, local tribal communities offer prayers at the base of the falls.

For the best experience, visit between July and December when the water flow is strongest. The approach road passes through scenic valleys and coffee plantations, making the journey itself a memorable part of the excursion.
