About Gupteswar Cave Temple

An ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva with a naturally formed Shiva Lingam believed to be growing in size. Surrounded by lush forests and a stream.

Hidden deep within the forested hills of Jeypore subdivision, Gupteswar Cave Temple is one of the most sacred and geologically fascinating religious sites in southern Odisha. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple's centrepiece is a naturally formed Shiva Lingam inside a limestone cave ÔÇö a lingam that local devotees and priests believe has been slowly growing in size over the centuries.

The approach to the cave temple is an experience in itself. A winding stone pathway descends through dense tropical forest, crossing a gentle stream before arriving at the cave entrance. The air grows cooler as you enter the cave, and the sound of dripping water echoes off ancient rock formations. The main cave chamber, illuminated by oil lamps and natural light filtering through crevices, houses the sacred lingam, which is bathed in a natural spring that seeps through the limestone above.

Geologists attribute the lingam's apparent 'growth' to the continuous deposition of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich water ÔÇö a process that has been occurring for thousands of years and has created stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations throughout the cave system.

The temple complex includes several smaller shrines at the cave entrance and a beautiful temple tank fed by a perennial stream. During Maha Shivaratri (February-March), the cave temple attracts thousands of devotees from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, who undertake the pilgrimage to seek Lord Shiva's blessings. The night-long vigil during Shivaratri, with chanting echoing through the cave chambers, is a profound spiritual experience.

The surrounding Gupteswar forest is home to diverse wildlife, and the area has been identified as an important ecological zone. Langurs, spotted deer, and various bird species are commonly seen on the approach trail.

A small museum near the temple entrance displays historical photographs and archaeological findings from the cave, including ancient inscriptions that date the site's religious significance to at least the 7th century CE.
