About Koraput Coffee Plantations

One of the few places in Odisha where coffee is commercially grown. Walk through plantations, learn about coffee processing, and taste freshly brewed local coffee.

Koraput is one of the few regions in Odisha where coffee is commercially cultivated, and the district's coffee plantations have become an increasingly popular attraction for visitors seeking an off-beat agricultural tourism experience. Spread across the hilly terrain around Liktiputti, Boipariguda, and Semiliguda, these plantations produce a unique shade-grown Arabica coffee with a distinctive flavour profile.

The story of Koraput coffee dates back to the 1930s when the British introduced coffee cultivation in the region, recognising the similarity of the Eastern Ghats' microclimate to that of the Western Ghats' renowned coffee-growing regions. The altitude (700-1,200 metres), regular rainfall, and red laterite soil create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Today, the Odisha government's Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation (TDCC) manages several plantations, providing livelihood to thousands of tribal families.

Visiting a Koraput coffee plantation is a multi-sensory experience. Walking through the shaded rows of coffee bushes ÔÇö grown beneath towering silver oak, jackfruit, and pepper vine canopies ÔÇö you'll encounter the progression from delicate white coffee blossoms (November-December) to green cherries and finally the bright red ripe berries ready for picking (January-March).

Many plantations now offer guided tours where visitors can participate in coffee cherry picking, observe the wet and dry processing methods used locally, and of course, taste freshly roasted and brewed Koraput coffee. The coffee has a smooth, medium-bodied character with notes of chocolate and citrus ÔÇö distinctly different from South Indian varieties.

The tribal communities involved in coffee cultivation have developed their own preparation methods, including a unique roasted and ground version served with jaggery instead of sugar. This tribal coffee experience is available at several homestays and local eateries in the Koraput area.

For purchase, fresh coffee powder from Koraput is available at the TDCC outlet in Koraput town and at the plantations during harvest season.
