The famous weekly Thursday market where the ancient Bonda tribe trades goods. A living museum of tribal culture and one of the most unique market experiences in India.
The Onukadelli Bonda Market is one of the most extraordinary and anthropologically significant weekly markets in India ÔÇö a living, breathing window into one of the world's oldest and most isolated tribal communities. Held every Thursday near the remote village of Onukadelli in the Malkangiri-Koraput border region, this market is primarily known for the participation of the Bonda tribe, one of India's Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
The Bonda, also called the Bonda Highlanders, are among the most ancient tribal communities in India, with a population of fewer than 12,000. The women are instantly recognizable by their distinctive appearance ÔÇö shaved heads adorned with colourful bead necklaces stacked from neck to chin, and wearing handwoven ringa (waistcloth). The men carry bows and arrows, reflecting their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Every Thursday morning, Bonda families descend from their hilltop settlements (at elevations of 3,000-4,000 feet) to trade at Onukadelli. The market is a riot of colour and activity ÔÇö tribal women sell forest produce including honey, turmeric, tamarind, and seasonal fruits, while purchasing salt, dried fish, cloth, and metal implements. The barter system still exists alongside cash transactions.
Beyond the Bonda, the market also attracts other tribal groups ÔÇö Paraja, Gadaba, and Didayi communities ÔÇö each identifiable by their distinct clothing, ornaments, and trading goods. The diversity of tribal cultures visible in a single location makes this market unique in all of India.
Visitors should approach the market with respect and cultural sensitivity. Photography of Bonda tribal members requires permission and sensitivity ÔÇö many community members prefer not to be photographed. It is recommended to visit with a knowledgeable local guide who can facilitate respectful cultural exchange.
The Odisha government and anthropological organizations monitor the market to ensure the Bonda community's rights are protected while allowing limited cultural tourism that benefits the local economy.
Onukadelli is approximately 45 km from Koraput town. Drive south towards Malkangiri on NH-326. The market begins early morning (7 AM) and winds down by noon. Hire a taxi from Koraput (approx Rs 1500-2000 return trip). A local guide is strongly recommended.
