A beautiful smaller waterfall near Nandapur surrounded by dense forests. The pool at the base is perfect for a refreshing dip. Great for day trips and photography.
Rani Duduma, meaning 'Queen of Waterfalls,' is a beautiful and relatively lesser-known waterfall located near Nandapur in the Koraput district. While smaller than its famous neighbour Duduma Falls, Rani Duduma compensates with an intimate, unspoiled charm that makes it a favourite among visitors seeking a peaceful communion with nature away from crowds.
The waterfall cascades approximately 60 metres down a rocky cliff face, splitting into multiple streams that create a veil-like curtain of water. The falls are fed by a seasonal stream that originates in the forested hills above, and the water collects in a natural rock pool at the base ÔÇö a crystal-clear basin that is perfect for a refreshing dip during the warmer months (with caution during monsoon).
The approach to Rani Duduma passes through dense tropical forest, where the canopy creates a cool, dappled pathway. The trail from the nearest road is approximately 1 km through relatively flat terrain, making it accessible for families and casual walkers. During the walk, you are likely to encounter butterflies, forest birds, and possibly the tracks of deer and wild boar.
The area around the falls is remarkably pristine, largely because it receives fewer visitors than the more famous Duduma Falls. This tranquility makes it an excellent spot for nature meditation, sketching, or simply sitting by the water and absorbing the sounds of the forest.
Local tribal communities consider Rani Duduma a sacred site, and small offerings of flowers and vermillion can often be seen at the base of the falls. The Paraja tribal women from nearby villages sometimes wash clothes and collect water from the stream below the falls, offering an authentic glimpse of daily tribal life.
For photographers, the best light at Rani Duduma occurs in the early morning (7-9 AM) when sunlight filters through the forest canopy and creates dramatic light beams through the spray. Long-exposure shots of the cascading water against the moss-covered rocks are particularly rewarding.
Rani Duduma is approximately 50 km from Koraput town, near Nandapur. Drive towards Nandapur on NH-326, then take the forest road towards the falls. A local guide from Nandapur is recommended. Taxi from Koraput costs approximately Rs 1200-1500 for a return trip.
